Keeping Your Carpets Clean During the Fall
Keeping Your Carpets Clean During the Fall – If you’re selling your home this fall, you know how important it is to keep it clean. We are now officially in fall, the first day of fall just recently came up and as the weather continues to change we will see more wet days. With those wet days comes rain, mud, and leaves that inevitably end up on the floors in our homes because, life happens.
The key to success in cleaning anything brought in on the souls of shoes as the weather changes, is to have a proactive prevention plan and to clean stains as soon as you see them. Here are some daily care tactics to help prevent and to treat stains that commonly occur during the fall.
Vacuum
Vacuum properly on a routine basis. This is any floor’s first and best defense against wear and tear. Everyday dirt is enemy number one to your floors. Ideally, high traffic areas should have a quick clean daily and all moderate traffic areas should be cleaned twice a week.
Doormats
Use high-quality doormats on both sides of every exterior door. Doormats help to keep a majority of the dirt that is on the bottom of shoes off of the floors. Each door that leads to the outside world should have a large enough mat to be just a bit wider than the door on both sides.
The mat outside the door should be like a scrub brush and the mat on the inside should be soft and akin to a small piece of carpet to adequately get as much off of shoes as possible.
Mud room?
Have a place set up next to the most used door in the home that people can set down muddy shoes and wet coats. A rubber mat placed just inside the door is very helpful to keep mud off of floors. Ideally getting in the habit of removing all shoes every time you come home will keep your floors much cleaner.
Pets and Carpets Clean
Don’t forget about the furry family members. Pet paws can do just as much damage as shoes when they have been outside and then traipse things through the home. If you have a pet door put mats near them and try to wipe your pet’s paws when they come in from wet or dirty places.
Carpets Clean & Spot Cleaning
Clean up any spots/stains as soon as you notice them. A good general spot cleaning treatment method is to start with a few clean white cloths or plain paper towels and blot as much of the stain out as possible. With the remaining stain use this gentle homemade all-purpose floor spot treatment: mix some room temperature water with a few drops of hand dishwashing soap. Dip a clean cloth in the soapy water and wring out the excess.
Blot the stain working from the outside toward the center using clean areas of cloth until the stain is gone. Follow up with a few blots of plain water and then finish by soaking up as much water as possible with a dry cloth.
If you have stains that just won’t come out there are some more specialized solutions you can use when you look up how to clean a specific stain. In our blog we have a few articles on how to treat specific stains.
For stains that are difficult no matter what you try call in a professional carpet cleaner. Sometimes cleaning solutions that are only sold commercially and strong professional equipment are what is needed.
