5 Sounds in Your Home You Don’t Want to Ignore

Sounds in Your Home You Dont Want to Ignore

It is not uncommon for a home to make noise once and again, especially in older homes. From a creek here to a pop there, it is all pretty common. But there are some noises that require a bit of maintenance and the sooner the better.

Here are some problematic noises to be aware of in your home and make sure they get the proper and timely maintenance attention they deserve

Water running when there is none turned on

If no one in the home is using any of the plumbing you should not hear the sound of water rushing through pipes. This could be a sign of a busted pipe somewhere inside the walls or under the floor. Unless you have experience in plumbing the best call for action is a call to a professional plumber.

A whistling sound from the furnace

This is a good sign that it is time to change your filter. The whistling sound could mean your furnace is trying to overcompensate and can eventually suck exhaust gases into the house. Ideally, furnace filters should be changed monthly.

Hissing noises in homes with natural gas

In homes with natural gas if there is a hissing sound this could be an indication of a gas leak. When there is a leak you will smell the gas. However, if you hear a hissing noise near your gas meter or at the outdoor gas post, you need to get out of the house immediately and call the gas company as well as a plumber.

Scratching sounds from behind the walls

If you hear noises in the walls like scratching or chittering this is a good indication of a pest issue. It could mean the presence of mice, squirrels, possums, and the like.

It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where the critters are and where they have entered from. If you hope to catch them sooner rather than later professional help is always the best. You don’t want them to cause significant damage to your home.

A clanking sound when you turn on the heat

When first turning on the system, if it produces a clinking or groaning noise this can be a sign of concern. The pump in a system should be silent in your HVAC system even if turning it on after a long period of time without being used.

It is always good to call in an HVAC specialist when you plan to turn on your system after non-use such as in the fall anyway. It is especially important if you hear these noises.

Maintenance is important and being as proactive with your maintenance as possible will help to keep maintenance costs down. There are things in your home that you do not want to ignore or let sit until they become major problems costing you thousands of extra dollars.
